Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is incredibly versatile and incredibly easy.  You’ll be surprised how many places you’ll want to use this for a quick dab of sweetness!  Even though I prefer unsweetened tea, I especially like to use it to sweeten up iced tea before I serve it to friends and family!

Simple syrup also takes well to flavorings.  Add a vanilla bean, a sprig of mint, a cinnamon stick, a few grates of ginger, some lemon juice and lemon zest, whatever flavor you might desire! Because I happened to have chocolate mint leaves on hand, I used them (photo above and below) – I also really love ginger simple syrup.

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1-2 tbsp desired flavoring (optional, see above)

Combine water, sugar, and flavoring in a saucepan.  Bring water to boil, stirring occasionally until the sugar is completely dissolved.  Remove from heat and set aside to allow to come to room temperature before use.  Strain and use or store as desired.  Usually keeps up to a week.
